Dan

Track Rail Engineering Technician Apprentice

Dan completed his apprenticeship in 2025, and was successful in getting a permanent job with us as an On Track Machine Operator in our Track and Fleet Maintenance Team.

This meant his learning has continued as he’s on a five month training programme to drive and operator our tamper, a huge track machine used to keep the ballast on the train track at the correct heights for the Metros to run smoothly. That training includes 90 hours of driving the machine as well as passing the same tests as train drivers do for route knowledge, signalling, speeds and more.

Dan said: “My apprenticeship was great, the college course and the learning on the job elements were a really good experience. Nexus is a great company to work for, there’s a real community spirit, everyone’s very friendly and willing to help you.

“Apprenticeships make so much sense, you learn the skills, you learn the job and you get paid. For me personally, my apprentice also opened up wider possibilities, I learned about track vehicles like the tamper and wanted to know more. I’m delighted to now have a full time job here, operating one of our most valuable and technical assets.”
