Third Party Works and Planning Liaison

Our teams provide expert advice and support if you're planning activities or developments on or near Nexus infrastructure.

Planning Liaison

We want to work with developers of significant sites in or near Tyne and Wear to ensure that public transport is prioritised in their proposals.

Good provision for sustainable transport is often very cost-effective in the context of an overall project, as it can help developers to gain planning permission, and is also a significant boost to a site’s marketability, whether for office, residential or commercial use.  All Tyne and Wear local authorities’ planning policies provide strong support for sustainable transport accessibility.

Contact us at planningliaison@nexus.org.uk, at the pre-planning stage, to discuss how we can help support sustainable transport accessibility to your development site.

Third Party Works

Planning work on or near our infrastructure?

We can help

Our Third Party Works team offers comprehensive guidance, support and facilitates access for activities taking place on or near Nexus infrastructure. We will assist with all queries and requirements to ensure your works proceed safely and efficiently.

What’s Third Party Work?

  • Neighbouring works such as demolition, construction or maintenance activities which are next to, over or under any Nexus infrastructure.
  • Organisations that require access to Nexus infrastructure to conduct surveys or repairs to assets that they own, such as bridges or underpasses.
  • Landowners working on their own property but using scaffolding or doing excavation activities that could have an impact on Nexus infrastructure.

How we can help

We can assist with granting access to our infrastructure for a variety of reasons, from routine inspections to more invasive works. Get in touch with us using our contact details below to discuss access requirements further. Costs associated with this can be found in the Third Party Engineering guidance document above.

We have a standard zone of influence when working above our underground infrastructure. When working within or close to these zones, you’ll need to contact us to discuss the works. You can find more information on these zones in the Third Party Engineering guidance document above.

Where works could have an impact on our infrastructure it will likely be a requirement for us to create an Asset Protection Agreement to protect both parties in the unlikely event that something goes wrong. You can find more information on this agreement in the Third Party Engineering guidance document above.

We work on a six week rolling cycle for booking access to our infrastructure. You’ll need to have any access requirements booked and signed off by our team six weeks before the date of access. If your works require more than our normal closure times (typically between 01:00 – 04:30 daily), the booking will need to be in place six months before the closure.

We can assist with vegetation management in a variety of different ways. Before contacting us to tell us more, it might be useful to visit the vegetation management page on the Travel North East site: Visit the page here.
