Our approach
From vision to action
Connecting our region, considering our impact.
Connecting communities
We know that a high quality, high performing public transport network is key to a successful region. We’ll make sure we get people to where they need to be, through projects including extending the Metro to Washington and reforming the region’s bus network.

Changing the way people travel
We plan and provide transport options that encourage people to choose public transport over their own cars for work or leisure travel. This shift is vital to reduce congestion and pollution in our crowded urban environment today and in the future.

Supporting economic regeneration
We plan the development of public transport to match the economic regeneration programmes in our region. We pay for bus services to serve areas with poor transport links. And many of the largest regeneration, retail and job creation areas planned for the future of Tyne and Wear will benefit from Metro services nearby.
See our strategy
Tackling climate change
By promoting sustainable travel, including public transport, car sharing. walking and cycling, we help reduce the impact we have on the environment. We’re committed to reducing the carbon impact of our own activities and those of our suppliers, by examining every part of our operation and finding ways to reduce waste and consumption.
Our environmental approachPlanning in partnership
As an executive body of the North East Combined Authority, we agree and carry out a robust corporate plan for achieving these aims and objectives. Our current plan sets out what we’ll deliver from 2025/26 to 2029/30.
How we measure success
Accountability is central to the way we work. We have clear performance targets and track and share progress throughout our projects and day-to-day operations. Our annual reports and accounts, along with other Nexus publications, are freely available here for you to read or download.
Going beyond together
We serve diverse communities with wide-ranging needs and expectations. That’s why we celebrate diversity in our people. Bringing together different perspectives and experiences can only make us better at delivering transport systems that work for everyone.
