Ongoing works across our system to make journeys smoother and safer.

Our Asset Renewal Programme

£1 billion invested so far

The Metro Asset Renewal Programme started in 2010 when the Government initially allocated £350m for us to renew ageing pieces of our infrastructure.

Since then, the project has continued to secure Government support, and we’ve invested £1 billion over the past 15 years.

Upgrades across the system

Major improvements

There’s not much of the Metro network we haven’t worked on, including:

  • 65km of track renewed or refurbished, making journeys smoother and helping us withstand more extreme weather conditions.
  • 35 stations refurbished. They’re lighter, brighter, more accessible and improve our customer experience.
  • 65km of overhead line has been replaced, reducing the risk of service disruptions.
  • 500 new CCTV cameras, because we’re always watching out for our customers.
  • 27 new escalators and 12 new lifts, because we’re committed to step free access and customer safety
  • 63 bridges repaired and three completely replaced in major engineering schemes
  • New help points and customer address system, to help us communicate with our customers better
