Kier appointed to revamp Regent Centre Metro station

Kier, an infrastructure services, construction and property group, has been appointed by Nexus to deliver the refurbishment of the busy Metro and bus interchange in Gosforth, near Newcastle.

Under the contract, Kier will create a safer, more reliable, accessible and future-ready transport hub that will transform the travelling experience for Metro passengers.

North East mayor Kim McGuinness and her cabinet agreed funding for the project in March.

This latest award of contract follows the successful upgrade and restoration project that Kier carried out at the Grade II listed Whitley Bay Metro station, which was completed in 2025.

The works at Regent Centre will be delivered using Kier’s 360 approach, with its infrastructure and construction divisions working together to combine specialist expertise and supply chain networks.
As lead delivery partner, the infrastructure team has brought in construction colleagues to lead the station fit‑out and refurbishment, ensuring the right expertise is applied at every stage, and the work is delivered to the highest standard for passengers.

The scope of works includes:

• Creation of a new retail unit
• Removal of the existing old bus canopy, which covers the road through the
• Modernising mechanical and electrical systems
• Providing civils and architectural elements
• Creating a brighter, more inviting space for passengers, to enhance the customer experience
• Updating wayfinding for improved accessibility

Alongside the delivery of this important upgrade, Kier will also focus on supporting Nexus’ social value aims by engaging with local schools and community groups.

As a strategic hub on both the Metro and bus network, it’s essential that Regent Centre sets the standard for modern, high‑quality and accessible public transport and what it looks like in our region. This refurbishment is about enhancing an interchange that supports multi‑modal travel and makes it easier for passengers to access the station, and begin region‑wide journeys.

“The investment will deliver refurbished Metro platforms and a brighter, more welcoming station concourse to improve crowd flow, complementing our new Metro fleet and additional security via new gatelines at this station.

“Further improvements include removing the old metal roof canopy, improved signage and enhancing welfare facilities for Nexus employees.”

Construction at the station is expected to commence this summer, and Kier will work with Nexus to minimise disruption to customers and the local community.
