Our bus network

Supporting communities

Where we work

Most bus services in Tyne and Wear are operated by private companies. These commercial operators run around 90% of all routes and are responsible for setting their own timetables, routes and ticket prices.

To help communities remain connected, we support around 300 bus services, subsidised by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority. These routes are provided in areas where commercial operators choose not to run—often early in the morning, late at night or at weekends.

These subsidised services help people continue to access jobs, education, healthcare and leisure opportunities, even where customer numbers are lower.

Our interchanges

We own or manage several key bus interchanges across Tyne and Wear, including:

  • Park Lane, Sunderland
  • Eldon Square and Haymarket, Newcastle
  • Gateshead Interchange
  • Wallsend
  • Jarrow
  • Blaydon
  • South Shields

Our on-site teams are available to provide information, help customers and ensure smooth journeys.

Improving bus services for the future

We’re also developing new ways to plan and deliver bus services to help reverse long‑term declines in customer numbers and make public transport a more attractive choice for everyone.

Carrying out street works?

Apply for a bus stop suspension

If a business or local authority wants to carry out street works which will affect the pick up and drop off at a bus stop or stops, a bus stop impact notification form must be completed.

Applications should be made at least two weeks in advance and charges apply.
