Skilled Worker Communications Signalling and Electrical

Typical day
Every day brings something different — but you can expect a mix of technical work, safety responsibilities and collaboration with your team.
Briefing & Preparation
- Join the start of shift briefing with your Production Supervisor or Site Manager
- Review the day’s planned works, priorities and task allocations
- Go over permits to- -work, risk assessments and method statements
- Discuss site hazards, changes since last shift and any safety critical- updates
- Take part in a Toolbox Talk (TBT) on key safety topics
- Gather and check tools, equipment, materials and PPE needed for the shift
You’ll use your technical expertise across:
- Maintenance — planned and reactive
- Testing & Commissioning
- Fault finding- & Repairs
- Inspection, Installation and Termination of copper and fibre cabling
- Working on signalling, ICT and electrical assets to ensure the safety of the line and environment
- You’ll also record completed work, materials used and time taken in written or electronic formats, ensuring accurate documentation for supervisors and future works.
About You
- You’ll bring technical expertise, personal accountability, and a commitment to maintaining high safety standards.
- Time served- with a BTEC (or equivalent) qualification in a relevant discipline
- Competent in electrical inspection, testing, installation and termination of copper and fibre cable
- In depth- knowledge of relevant systems and equipment within your responsibility area
- Strong understanding of Health & Safety requirements at work
- Able to work shifts, standby and call-out when required
- Holds a current UK driving licence
- Experience working within organisational standards, procedures and controls
- Previous experience working in a railway environment
- Ability to work flexibly, independently and as part of a team
- Competence or training in Lookout, PTS, WSC, Trainmaster, Machine Controller, or OLE Switching activities.
You’ll be someone who can:
- Take initiative and work independently on site with limited supervision
- Solve problems in real time and make sound decisions under pressure
- Ensure safe working practices are embedded into everything you do
- Communicate clearly and effectively so tasks are understood.
Our Team
You will join the Communications, Signalling and Electrical team.
You will work with electrical and signalling teams undertaking infrastructure works, correlation testing, installation and modifications of signalling systems and electrical equipment.
