We're looking for a skilled and safety-focused Marine Engineering Technician to join our Ferry Engineering team. If you're an experienced engineer who enjoys solving technical problems, working with a variety of mechanical and electrical systems, and contributing to the safe operation of a vital public service, we'd love to hear from you.
About the role
As a Marine Engineering Technician, you'll be responsible for the maintenance, inspection, fault diagnosis and repair of the vessels and infrastructure that support the operation of the Shields Ferry.
Working on a range of marine engineering systems, you'll carry out planned and reactive maintenance activities on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and safety-critical equipment. You'll play a key role in ensuring the reliability and availability of ferry assets while supporting the safe operation of the service for both passengers and crew.
This is a varied role where no two days are the same. You'll work both independently and as part of a supportive team, helping to maintain one of the North East's most recognisable transport services.

Typical day
- Carrying out planned and reactive maintenance on ferry vessels, landings and associated infrastructure.
- Diagnosing and repairing faults across mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Conducting inspections, testing and commissioning activities to ensure equipment remains safe and operational.
- Working on engines, generators, propulsion systems, pumps, fire suppression equipment, HVAC systems and other marine assets.
- Interpreting engineering drawings, technical manuals and diagnostic information to resolve complex faults.
- Completing maintenance records, inspection reports and engineering documentation.
- Working safely in a range of operational environments, including confined spaces, working at height and electrical isolation activities.
- Liaising with contractors, suppliers and engineering specialists to support maintenance activities.
- Participating in standby, call-out and emergency response arrangements when required.
- Supporting colleagues through knowledge sharing, mentoring and teamwork.
Essential
- NVQ Level 3 Engineering qualification (or higher).
- GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent).
- Full, valid UK driving licence.
- Experience working in an engineering role within a maritime environment.
- Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
- Experience diagnosing and resolving technical faults on engineering equipment.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
- Good understanding of health and safety legislation and safe systems of work.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Competent in Microsoft Office applications and technical reporting.
- Experience working with ship maintenance, marine engineering, diesel engines or high-voltage systems.
- Experience working with contractors and suppliers.
- Experience of assembling, overhauling, testing and inspecting engineering systems.
- Experience working in hazardous or high-risk environments.
