Metro’s just the ticket for Gateshead newlyweds Laura and Aaron

Laura and Aaron Capon were inspired by a recent trend in New York where couples opt for its iconic subway system to get married.

This gave them the idea to swap the traditional wedding car for the hustle and bustle of Metro on their very own big day.

The happy couple caught the Metro from Gateshead to Haymarket to tie the knot at Newcastle Civic Centre.

And they delighted their fellow passengers during the journey, with plenty of people spotting them in their wedding attire and stopping to wish them well.

Laura, 33, who runs a social media business, documented the special journey on her popular food and lifestyle channel on Instagram, @geordie.scran, and the video already has over 150,000 views.

She said: “It was really good fun getting the Metro to our wedding. We both loved it. It is something a bit different.

“I had seen the trend over in New York where couples are swapping the more picture-perfect settings for the subway, and in some cases, they actually get married on the train. We really wanted to recreate that, but on our own Metro system here.

“I wanted the most Newcastle way possible to get married, so the Metro really had to play a part on the day.

“We opted to travel to and from the register office with just our videographer in tow. A few passengers were coming over to say congratulations, which was lovely. I even had messages from people after the wedding saying that they had seen us on the train. It really was a case of from the Metro to matrimony.”

Laura added: “The reception with all our guests was the next day at a venue up at Chathill in north Northumberland called Doxford Barns.

“What we did the day before was our own smaller ceremony where we were legally married at the civic centre with just a few close friends there, and then we just grabbed a coffee afterwards.”

Aaron, 34, said: “I loved getting the Metro to the wedding. It was a memorable experience.

“It was a Friday morning so there were still people on the train heading to work and university. It brought a smile to people’s faces. We were in our own little bubble that morning, but it was great that so many people came over and said we had helped to make their day.”

The NYC subway wedding trend sees couples swapping traditional venues for the underground transit system. Couples are riding the trains in full wedding attire, turning commutes into candid photo shoots, and even hosting entire, low-cost receptions on moving subway cars with DJs, cakes, and unsuspecting passengers.

This raw, guerrilla-style approach to celebrating has grown in popularity as couples look for ways to save money and embrace spontaneity.
